Ferry Crossing (4 November 2015)

From the very first moment that I moved to Washington State I have loved riding the Washington State Ferries. I still clearly remember my first trip, to Vashon Island, and It was a day much like the one in this image, cold and stormy. I remember standing on the "pickle forks"  in the wind and rain and loving every minute of it.

Even now, 15+ years later I still often find myself outside during a crossing. And over the years I must have taken 100s, more likely 1000s, of images of the ferries. I find the ferries classic and beautiful. So many appealing lines and shapes. The photo ops are endless.

There wasn't anything technically unique about this shot. I took it hand held with my "point and shoot" Sony RX1R. I was just drawn into the image by the strong leading lines that lead to the stack and then the stormy clouds behind. And although I have many images of stunning ferries with beautiful blue skies, it is always the stormy ones that remind me of the value the ferries provide to the islands of the Puget Sound.
